WE HAVE REACHED the final
destination here at Binary
Passion. This is the ANSI art
page, dedicated to the fine art
of block characters and a classic
16-color palette.
The original ANSI art was
popularized by Bulletin Board
Systems (BBS) of the dial-up era.
By using block characters █ ▄ ▀
and the characters ▓ ▒ ░ with
different background and
foreground colors, you can
accomplish shading and depth.
People have created extraordinary
art based on everything from
famous photos, comic book
characters, fantasy worlds, and
horror movies to pure abstract
art featuring these block
characters. Although I admire the
styles above, I have always had
a soft spot for typography and
logo design.
The format used to send these
files was a text-based format
called .ans. But, what is an .ans
file?
In essence, it is a text file
with the characters you like to
display and the escape codes for
the color syntax. It looks
something like [U+001b][0m▓ -
which would be terrible to write
by hand - so editors were
created.
This also means that they can be
displayed in an HTML document if
you convert the escape codes into
classes and CSS:
Since this requires using the
correct colors, font, and
settings to accurately represent
the intended appearance on the
screen, the most common approach
is to convert the ANSI file into
a bitmap image.
That is why ANSI art is often
displayed as an image on the web,
as seen on 16colo.rs, for
instance.
If you omit the color and save
the blocks as a pure text file,
we’re back to the NFOs instead.
See NFO art for more info...
